Motorists in NSW can now download a digital copy of their licence and it will be deemed a legal form of identification on the roadside and to get into some pubs and clubs. However, there are some handy tips worth knowing so you don’t end up with a fine:

• If you get pulled over by the police, do not pick up your phone until the officer requests to see your driver licence. Significant penalties apply for using a mobile phone illegally

• The display on your phone can’t be obscured by a cracked screen — if your phone battery is flat, you still need to produce a physical licence. Otherwise you could still risk a $114 on the spot fine for ‘not produce driver’s licence’

• When using the digital driver’s licence for ID purposes, the law says you do not need to hand anyone your phone — but you need to display it so they can verify your information

• The digital licence has a moving holograph behind it to prove its authenticity, and police can ask motorists who present the digital licence to swipe down on their smartphone to make sure the information is ‘refreshed’ and therefore up to date

• Digital licences can only be used in NSW. You will need to produce a physical licence if riding in other States or Territories.

Yes. You can use a mobile phone to make or receive audio phone calls if it is secured in a mounting (i.e. cradle) fixed to the vehicle.

[MCCNSW ACTIVISM]
While entering a service centre on the M1, a rider came off her bike due to a poorly maintained road surface. The RMS accepted responsibility for causing the crash, but suggested it would be easier for her to make a claim through CTP for her injuries and loss of wages. The MCC raised her case with the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) and ensured the RMS footed the bill, thereby protecting motorcyclists’ CTP premiums.

If you have a single vehicle motorcycle crash as the result of gravel, potholes, etc., you need to note in your application for CTP compensation that your crash was the result of someone else’s negligence. You also need to let the MCC know so we can follow it up with SIRA to ensure that we, as riders, are not paying for it through higher CTP premiums.
